Early Life

Shanice was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on May 14, 1973, and relocated to Los Angeles with her aunt and mother when she was a child. Both ladies were pursuing music careers, but it was Shanice who began attracting the most attention. They both shifted their attention to managing her career.

Shanice began her career in commercials and moved to TV shows appearing on the 1st season of Kids Incorporated and competing on Star Search.  She was nine years when she first appeared on KFC commercials with vocalist Ella Fitzgerald and legendary Jazz. She signed a contract with A&M Records when she was 14 years old.

Career Life

In 1987, A&M records released her first album, Discovery, at the age of 14. The album features the two top 10 hits. No ½ Stepping and you can dance.  Shanice went to sign a contract with Motown Records in 1990, and in late 1991, she released Inner child, which featured her best popular single, I Love Your Smile.  The hit reached top 10 in 22 countries, including US Billboard Hot R&B and number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. Shanice released four successful albums since then, including Every Woman Dreams in 2006.

Shanice first appeared in Season 5 of Family Matters in 1997, becoming the first black performer to star in the Epinone in the musical Les Miserables on Broadway. Shanice made an appearance in her husband’s show One on One in 2001 as a singer.

She also starred in the One Special Moment, an adaption of Brenda Jackson’s novel of the same name. She joined Frenchie Davis and Niecy Nash in 2011 for the 21st Annual Divas Simply Singing HIV/AIDS charity event. In 2014, Shanice and her husband began appearing together in reality TV called Flex & Shanice. The show starred on May 31 on Oprah’s OWN network.
