Matthau was a heavy smoker and had his first heart attack in 1996. Ten years after the heart attack, he went through heart bypass surgery. In 1993, he was hospitalized with double pneumonia after working for Grumpy Old Men in Minnesota’s freezing weather.
According to his death certificate, he died of “Atherosclerotic Heart Disease,” “Cardiac Arrest,” and “Atrial Fibrillation.”
